Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Matteo Renzi, President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Matteo Renzi, President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy. They discussed Italy’s current presidency of the Council of the European Union and exchanged views on the security implications of the situation in Libya and its impact on migration.

The Secretary-General welcomed Italy’s participation in international efforts to counter ISIL, and underscored the need for united, decisive action against the extremists. He also thanked Italy for its valuable role in the fight against Ebola and looked forward to its continued support.

The Secretary-General highlighted Italy’s important contributions to peace efforts, in Lebanon, Somalia and Afghanistan, hoping that such contributions could be maintained.

They also discussed the upcoming Milan Expo 2015 and the importance of continued efforts to fight food insecurity around the world.
