As the parties prepare to resume the peace talks in Havana next week, the Secretary-General is encouraged that the year has begun with optimism in Colombia about the prospects for reaching a peace agreement in 2015.

The Secretary-General welcomes the importance attached by both parties to de-escalating the military confrontation. He is pleased to learn that the unilateral cease-fire initiated by the FARC-EP on 20 December 2014 has held and expresses the hope that this important gesture can be maintained. He commends the decision by President Juan Manuel Santos to begin discussions that could lead to a bilateral cease-fire. Both parties are encouraged to persist in their talks on the possible implementation of humanitarian measures to diminish the intensity of the conflict.

The Secretary-General reiterates the full support of the United Nations to the process.

Proceso de paz en Colombia

En este momento en que las partes se preparan para reanudar las conversaciones de paz en La Habana la próxima semana, al Secretario General le complace que el año haya comenzado con optimismo en Colombia sobre las perspectivas de alcanzar un acuerdo de paz en 2015.

El Secretario General recibe con satisfacción la importancia que ambas partes atribuyen a desescalar la confrontación militar. El Secretario General se complace en saber que el cese al fuego unilateral iniciado por las FARC-EP el 20 de diciembre de 2014 se ha mantenido y espera que este importante gesto pueda continuar. Felicita también la decisión del Presidente Juan Manuel Santos de iniciar discusiones conducentes a un cese al fuego bilateral. Alienta a las partes a continuar sus conversaciones sobre la posible aplicación de medidas humanitarias para disminuir la intensidad del conflicto.

El Secretario General reitera el pleno apoyo de las Naciones Unidas al proceso.
