Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Samiuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Samiuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga.

The Secretary-General congratulated the Prime Minister on his election in December 2014 and welcomed him to the United Nations. They discussed the sustainable development goals and climate change.  The Secretary-General applauded the leadership of the Pacific to build the political momentum for a meaningful and binding agreement at the Paris Climate Change Conference. The Secretary-General commended efforts in Tonga on good governance and women’s empowerment.
