Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with Ministers of the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS)

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

The Secretary-General met today with Ministers of the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) on the margins of the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

He noted that despite their vulnerabilities to a problem these States did not cause, they have demonstrated global climate leadership and set positive examples on both mitigation and adaptation.

The Secretary-General said that as we enter the crucial year leading to the Paris Conference in December 2015, he will look to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) for their moral voice once again, having seen first-hand the growing threat they face.

He urged AOSIS to further amplify its call for a meaningful, universal agreement in 2015.

The Secretary-General recognized the ambitious renewable energy targets set by the SIDS, showing that a clean energy pathway is possible.
