Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H. E. Mr. Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya, in the margins of the 67th General Assembly

The Secretary-General met with the President of the Republic of Kenya, H. E. Mr. Mwai Kibaki, today. They discussed the preparations for the 2013 general elections in Kenya.

The Secretary-General thanked the President for Kenya’s critical contribution to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and underlined the importance of AMISOM Forces continuing to pay attention to international human rights and humanitarian law.

He also expressed appreciation for Kenya’s generous hosting of refugees, and urged increased international support for Kenya in this regard.

Both leaders agreed on the priority of sustainable development for Africa, especially the contribution that the United Nations Environment Programme could make.
