Public service announcements (PSAs) produced in commemoration of the Day and featuring United Nations Messengers of Peace, Muhammad Ali (click here for video) and Luciano Pavarotti (click here for video) were launched on Monday 15 September at UN Headquarters. The production of PSAs represent the result of a joint effort between the UN and media giant A&E Television Networks.
     
 
UNICEF also joined in advocating for peace through its broad mandate which focusses specifically on maintaining the well-being of children around the world. To mark the International Day of Peace UNICEF released a "Map of Programmes for Adolescent Participation".
     
 
Secretary-General Kofi Annan delivered a message of peace to the world and ring the Japanese Peace Bell, located in the West Court Garden on the front lawn of the Secretariat Building, on Friday 19 September at 10 a.m. Five prominent personalities appointed by the Secretary-General as United Nations Messengers of Peace - Muhammad Ali, Anna Cataldi, Michael Douglas, Jane Goodall and Elie Wiesel -- accompanied the Secretary-General. More than 400 students representing more than 30 countries bore flags of the Organization’s 191 Member States during the ceremony.
     
 
On 19 September, in a Department of Public Information sponsored event organized in collaboration with non-governmental organizations, Pathways To Peace and the World Peace Prayer Society, students from more than 30 countries will join Mrs. Nane Annan for a programme at United Nations Headquarters. Ex-child soldiers and other children affected by war will interact with United Nations Messengers of Peace. The programme will link via video-conference to war-affected children in a number of countries in which UN peace operations are based.
     
 
An International Day of Peace Vigil, organized by a conglomerate of non-governmental organizations and supported by the UN, was held in the Meditation Room located in the General Assembly Public Lobby at 46th Street & First Avenue. The Vigil was also observed in several countries, including Argentina, Australia, Benin, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Germany, Ghana, India, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Liberia, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Phillipines, Poland, Sierra Leone, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, Venezuela, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Zimbabwe, and in the Palestinian Authority.
     
 
The Secretary-General has invited States to participate in the annual Treaty Event entitled Focus 2003: Treaties Against Transnational Organized Crime and Terrorism which will take place from 23-26 September at UN Headquarters. In addition, States can also participate by signing, ratifying or acceding to any of the 500 treaties deposited with the Secretary-General. Among these treaties, the Convention on Transnational Organized Crime and its three protocols, the Convention on the Protection of UNited Nations Personnel and Associated Personnel; the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control; and the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture are being highlighted.
     
 
Beginning Monday 15 September until Friday 26 September, the UN Recreation Council Feng Shui Group displayed artwork in a "Miracles of Peace Exhibit" in the Secretariat Building. The exhibition featured quilts, banners, paintings and sculptures, among other works.
     
 
Audio-visual images featuring UN staff members working in the field and other images signifying international peace and security were on display in the public lobby of the Secretariat building from 19 September to 2 October.
   
    At United Nations Information Centres (UNICs) and Services:
     
 
Armenia: The Yerevan Office of the UN Department of Public Information held a feature exhibition for victims of landmines in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabagh. Among other initiatives, the office launched a book on Globalization and terrorism.
     
 
Austria: On Friday 19 September, the United Nations Information Service (UNIS/Vienna) hosted an event featuring performances by Austria's Starmania singer, Niddl and the children's choir EuRoots. Two non-governmental organizations, VIER PFOTEN and Global 2000, presented giant peace doves to the UN Office in Vienna (UNOV). The event culminated with the ringing of the UN Peace Bell. The peace doves will be included in displays for guided tours through UNOV.
     
 
Bulgaria: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Bulgarian Ministry of Youth and Sports jointly organized a comprehensive programme .The day began with the first graffiti-logo festival during which young people illustrated their visions for peace and development. In addition, a prominent politicians, public figures, and students ran a part of the Olympic route (2004m) to. T-shirts commemorating Peace One Day and the UN initiative Millennium Development Goals were provided to all participants. A football match featuring famous politicians, diplomats, Bulgarian football players and other prominent citizens was also held at the National Stadium in Sofia under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
     
 
Cameroon: Among other initiatives, UNIC/Yaounde organized a media event to coincide with the Peace Bell ceremony a the UN Headquarters in New York on 19 September. On the International Day of Peace, spiritual leaders were urged to preach sermons of peace using excerpts from the Secretary-General's message for the Day.
     
 
Ghana: The United Nations Information Centre/Accra commenced its commemorative activities on Friday 19 September through the broadcast of radio and television programming issues around Ghana on peace. On Saturday, with the assistance of the Cinema Division of the Information Services Department, films on forgiveness, reconciliation, the ravages of war and HIV/AIDS were screened. Along with ongoing sports and cultural events, on Sunday 21 September, a rally was held in Bortiano at which the guest of honour was the Greater Accra Regional Minister.
     
 
Italy: On Sunday 21 September, UNIC/Rome held a peace march beginning at the Coliseum. The march, organized in collaboration with the Commune of Rome and the Jane Goodall Institute/Italy, was staged through the city to the Piazza Campidoglio (City Hall Square). During a brief ceremony, a message was presented from the Secretary-General, Mayor of Rome and Dr. Goodall. The event was widely covered by the media, including RAI TV-3, 2000 TV and Vatican Radio.
     
 
Japan: UNIC/Tokyo, in collaboration with the Goi Peace Foundation, disseminated information about the Day to approximately 15,000 public and private schools in major cities throughout Japan, encouraging them to observe the day in an appropriate manner.
     
 
Kenya: The UN Office in Nairobi (UNON) commemorated the Day on Friday 19 September. Students from three schools in Nairobi produced materials dedicated to the theme of peace for a small display and a symposium on peace issues comprising a panel of persons involved in peace processes in the region was held. Also, UNIFEM's Regional Director launched a book on women, war and peace.
     
 
Lebanon: The Office of the Permanent Representative of the Secretary-General in Beirut held a peace awards ceremony on 21 September.
     
 
Libya: UNIC/Tripoli produced an information kit in commemoration of the Day, in which was included the Secretary-General's message in Arabic. The office also arranged for related television programming covering peace issues with a focus on the impact on the work of the United Nations resulting from the recent Baghdad tragedy.
     
 
Mexico: In collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UNIC/Mexico produced educational materials focusing on issues relevant to peace. On Sunday 21 September, a replica of the Japanese Peace Bell was rung. UNIC/Mexico also launched a promotion of peace campaign aimed at developing individual attitudes to build a culture of peace.
     
 
Nepal:The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) office in Nepal in collaboration with the National Coalition on Children as Zones of Peace organized a peace bell ringing campaign during which all citizens were encouraged to ring a bell for peace at 12 noon on Sunday 21 September. Radio Nepal agreed to spearhead in the initiative.
     
 
Nigeria: UNIC/Lagos, Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and the Nigerian Army College of Logistics coordinated a special public lecture on the theme "Building the Defences of Peace and Security in West Africa: The role of the United Nations". Government officials, military personnel, the media, non-governmental organizations and civil society groups were expected to be among the participants.
     
 
Pakistan: About 200 participants from non-governmental organizations, government ministries, UN agencies, and schools and colleges in Pakistan attended a ceremony in Islamabad, which featured the reading of the Secretary-General's message for the Day. It was jointly organized by UNIC/Islamabad and the Peace Council of Pakistan.
     
 

Panama: In collaboration with the Institute William Killpatrick, The Lions Club, Americas University, and 20 government and private high schools, UNIC/Panama organized events throughout the month of September as part of its commemorative activities:

Portugal: In collaboration with the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation, UNIC/Lisbon held a concert of peace featuring a famous Portuguese pianist.
     
 
Russian Federation: To highlight the Day's observance, UNIC/Moscow has organized a commemorative event with the Museum of Peacekeeping Operations in Moscow. Students from the city's schools will hold a feature concert, after which Russian veteran United Nations Peacekeepers will be given service awards.
     
 
Tanzania: UNIC/Dar es Salaam commemorated the day with Tanzanian Government officials, diplomats, and with representatives of religious and civil society organizations at an inter-faith event. The Secretary-General's message for the Day was delivered to the audience.
     
 
Thailand: UNIC/Bangkok held a multi-feature event on Friday 19 September during which a special message was delivered by winner of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, Ms. Jody Williams. The highlight of the event, which took place at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok, was the ringing of a peace bell at noon on Friday 19 September.
     
 
Timor-Leste: 21 September: A four km Bicycle Ride for Peace will start at 4 pm in the center of Dili.
     
 
United Kingdom: UNIC/London created a special website devoted to promoting issues relevant to the Day.
     
 
Uzbekistan: UNO/Tashkent marked the Day with a special peace ceremony on Thursday 18 September, attended by a wide cross-section of individuals and organizations. A display of peace doves on which messages of peace were written in Uzbek, Russian, English and Dari was a feature of the ceremony. Children from several schools also presented their "declarations of peace" to guests. The event was widely covered in the national media.
     
 
Zimbabwe: UNIC/Harare commemorated the Day on 20 September in a number of ways: A Peace Prayer was held in the morning. In the afternoon, a peace drama, entitled "Peace and Peace Always" was performed by children from the Zimbabwean Academy of Arts Education for Development. Afterwards, a Peace Concert was staged at the Harare International Conference Centre. A UN representative also participated in activities organized by the Centre for Peace Initiatives in Africa in Mutare.
   
    At United Nations Peace-building and Peacekeeping Missions:
     
 
Bougainville: The UN Political Office in Bougainville (UNPOB) supported a special event planned by representatives of the three ex-combatant fractions, women, religious, business and local government authorities in Bougainville. Among others, a weapons-destruction event was held.
     
 
Burundi: The United Nations Office in Burundi (UNOB) arranged for a variety of educational and cultural initiatives in collaboration with other UN offices, including the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), diplomatic representatives, national and international non-governmental organizations and civil groups, and government ministries and agencies. A "Peace March" in Bujumbura Rural was guided by the provincial Governor.
     
 
Central African Republic: As part of its commemoration of the Day, the United Nations Peace-building Office in the Central African Republic (BONUCA) held an art exhibition under the theme "Peace in the Central African Republic".
     
 
Cote D'Ivoire: The UN Mission in Cote D'Ivoire (MINUCI) arranged for the Secretary-General's message for the Day to be placed in major news media around the country.
     
 
Guatemala: For the Day's commemoration, the main event organized by the United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) was the inauguration of the UN Children's Park in the western highland city of Huehuetenango on Sunday 21 September. On Monday, a peace awareness concert was organized in collaboration with the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) involving premier Guatemalan performers attended. It was attended by about 2,500 students from public and private high schools in Guatemala City. As part of its effort to educate the population on the meaning of the Day, the Mission also produced and aired radio and television spots in Spanish and four indigenous languages.
     
 
Guinea-Bissau: The United Nations Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNOGBIS) also commemorated with public awareness programmes to be broadcast on radio, as well as sports and cultural initiatives.
     
 
Senegal: The Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa highlighted the peacekeeping role of the United Nations and promoted the need for a culture of intermational peace.
     
 
Somalia: The UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) focussed on peace advocacy, educational and sports campaigns specifically geared toward youth. An international peace awareness campaign, during which involved the internationally acclaimed football clubs -- Real Madrid offered two scholarships to young Somalis for their 2004 summer camp and FC Barcelona donated sports materials to national football teams - was also launched. UNPOS supported a number of programmes held in locations around Somalia, including peace rallies of tens of thousands of citizens in Mogadishu and Garowe, among other events in Belet-Weyne, Hargeisa, Johwar and Kismayo.
     
 
Tajikistan: The United Nations Tajikistan Office of Peace-building (UNTOP) organized a comprehensive programme, scheduled to culminate in November with a symposium on "Factors Threatening Peace" and the publication of a brochure highlight the role of the national political parties in peace efforts. On 21 September a Festival of Peace was held, which attracted wide coverage in the national and international media. Among other activities and events, on Wednesday 17 September, a television programme was aired on national television highlighting issues of peace, national reconciliation, non-violence as well as the role of UNTOP.
     
 
Timor-Leste: The UN Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) arranged for a week-long commemoration of the Day. On Thursday 18 September a special programme which addressed peace related issues, such as peace in the region; terrorism, reconciliation and Timor-Leste's road to peace and reconciliation following UNMISET's closing, was broadcast on television and radio. Among other initiatives, UNMISET organized a cycle riding peace parade in which over 200 persons, including UN staff members, participated. UNMISET also supported activities and events organized by a number of civil organizations.
     
 
Southern Lebanon: The Office of the Personal Representative of the Secretary-General for Southern Lebanon (OPRSG) used the opportunity to undertake an initiative to promote awareness of the area's natural, historic and cultural attractions, which was announced on Friday 19 September. The winning designs for the project are scheduled to be announced early in 2004.
