The
non-governmental organization, Jeunesse pour la
paix (Youth for Peace), organized various activities
aimed at sensitizing youth on the necessity of attaining
global peace. As part of their commemorative activities,
on Saturday 20 September a concert of peace was held
and on Sunday 21 September a silent march was staged
through the city of Cotonou. Five white doves were
symbolically released. Jeunesse pour la paix
also focussed activities aimed at encouraging the
enjoyment of peace in a healthy environment. |

On Monday 22 September, the Libyan non-governmental organization, International Organization for Peace, Care and Relief held a ceremony at which representatives of the UN were guests of honour. Certificates of honour were presented to national and international personalities who influence global peace and security issues. One was presented posthumously to Sergio Viera de Mello. |

President Kessai H. Note of the Marshall Islands signed a proclamation in which he urged all government departments and agencies, organizations, schools, places of worship and individuals throughout the nation to commemorate the Day appropriately. |

The Mauritius Institute of Education held a 5-kilometre peace march from the Municipality of Quatre Bornes to the Institute's headquarters at Reduit. After that, a small conference was convened at which personalities from different socio-cultural backgrounds spoke on issues of peace and education. |

The Secretary-General's message was delivered by a UN representative, among other features.A number of other national and international non-governmental organizations also organized a peace walk through the city of Lahore on the Day. |

On Sunday 21 September, people of different religious backgrounds converged at the Quezon memorial Circle in Quezon City for a peace ceremony during which a peace bell was rung. It was the first such observance of the International Day of Peace in the country. |

The United Islamic Centre of East Timor organized a peace campaign for members during the week of 17 to 24 September. On Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September, the Moslem and Baha'i incorporated peace prayers into their services. On Sunday 21 September churches around the country commemorated the Day during their services. |

The Australian based group, The Global Reconciliation Network, was scheduled to hold an international conference in London from 19 to 21 September. Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is expected to open the conference which will feature a number of other speakers from academic institutions, religious and civil society organizations.

A New York Central Park observance of the Peace Vigil was organized by a consortium of non-governmental organizations for Sunday 21 September. The NGOs began the observance in front of the New York Headquarters building through the city's streets to Central Park. |

Share the Spirit of Peace Youth Summit was held in New York from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 September. On Friday, participants raised the flags of all Member States during the Peace Bell ceremony at UN Headquarters and attended the student observance immediately afterwards. In addition to cultural and other activities, the international summit culminated on Sunday when it joined the day-long World Peace Festival in Amenia, NY, where a gathering celebrated the Day in a variety of ways, including music. |

Through the initiative of the NGO Committee for the International Day of Peace, Governors of Alaska, California, Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, Vermont and Washington have issued proclamations for the Day. The Mayor of Los Angeles also issued a proclamation.
