One Heart, One World 3- 25 April 2000

"One Heart, One World" is an exhibition of 100 poems,
written by individuals with disabilities from each of the 6 countries
where the exhibit will visit and based on what they feel and experience in their everyday lives,
and of the 100pieces of collaborative artwork, works created by artists, writers
and other individuals -each active in a variety of fields - that attempt to convey the feelings and emotions contained within those poems.
It is our sincere hope that this exhibition will assist those with a limited sensitivity or
understanding towards the welfare of those with disabilities to reach a
fuller and deeper comprehension of, and thereby have greater empathy for, these individuals.

UNESCO and the United Nations are sponsoring this exhibition.

Feet to Wheels

In a walkway of hardened concrete
Stand the imprint of two tiny feet:
A child had placed them in the cement quite some time ago
While the wet mix could still be shaped like the virgin snow.
Thm next to those two feet, the child wrote his name.
And he proudly spelled Eugene, without a guilt or shame.

Well in the years to conw, that young boy was forced to grow,
And he endured many a hardship, along the path he chose.
But a new fate, that adolescent found
As a paraplegic, now wheelchair bound.

So now I am presented, with a fresh new mix of concrete,
And I think I'll make an imprint, with two wheels instead of two feet.
Then once again I'll carve my name and prodly spell Eugene,
And continue to live a full rich life without a guilt or shame.

Love Is A Language

Love is a language,
straight from the heart.
It keeps us together when our lives fall apart.
We should never depart it,
because it keeps us together
when our lives fall apart.

My Gardenia

Met her, got to know her by just hanging out.
Buy her a soda, had my doubts.

Talked about our days, just enjoying each other.
As we spent time together getting to know one another.

My feelings became deeper, I began to love.
Talked to close friends who responded that it was...

Better to have loved than
To have never loved at all.

Told her about my feelings, she shared hers too.
We knew we had something special but there was nothing I could do.

Being where I am I knew we'd go nowhere.
With me loving her...
From my chair.
