Event Name: International Day of the Girl Child
Event Description: The theme for the first-ever observance of the Day will be "Ending Child Marriage," chosen because child marriage is a phenomenon that violates millions of girls' rights, disrupts their education, jeopardizes their health, and denies them their childhood, limiting their opportunities and impacting all aspects of a girl's life.
UN Sponsor: Department of Public Information (DPI)
Activities: Governments in partnership with civil society actors and the international community are called upon to take urgent action to end the harmful practice of child marriage. The day will be marked with a high-level panel event at UNHQ in New York, among other activities.
