Programme for Rural water supply and sanitation
in Sofala Province, Mozambique. |
The Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) has launched a
programme for rural water supply and sanitation in Sofala
Province, Mozambique. To make the demand principle operational
it was necessary to elaborate two strategies: a communication
strategy and a gender strategy. The strategies were tools for
the mobilization campaigns, training and public information in
an environment where the users in their majority are illiterate
women in remote rural areas. |

10 Years of Water Protection in the
Czech Republic |
In the early 90’s, the state of the environment and particularly
water and air, were considered critical, with an urgent need for
major improvement. During the period 1990-1999, the Czech
Republic has demonstrated that fundamental improvements in the
development of water protection can be achieved in a relatively
short term through systemic changes in legislation,
organizational, institutional and economic character. In early
1999, in preparation to accede to the European Union, the
requirements of the European water law were incorporated in
Czech legislation, especially through the Act on Waters, the Act
on Public Water Mains and Sewerages, and the Act on Public
Health. At present, and along the EU Framework Water Directive,
the main goal is to achieve implementation of the main
principles of sustainable development in the area of water
protection by the year 2015. |

Rebuilding booster pumping stations in Azerbaijan
|
Switzerland’s involvement in the
water sector in Azerbaijan consisted of a grant to rebuild
booster pumping stations in the Baku area. The project was
inaugurated in 2003 when nearly all pumps were successfully
installed. The rehabilitation of the booster pumping stations
was an important component of a comprehensive rehabilitation of
the water supply network of the greater Baku area, funded
primarily by the World Bank and European Bank for Reconstruction
and Development (WB and EBRD).

The Regional Water Supply System
“Studencia” covers two river catchments, 20 local
self-government units, with approximately 70,000 people who are
with different ethnical background. As the result of this
project, the Public Enterprise was established for water
management, by which the management of this resource is
transferred to the end users. The Public Enterprise also
provides even distribution of water in the region. |

Enhancement Assessment Capacity
of Moroccan Science and Technology Institutions in Water
Management |
Cooperation between Belgian
universities and universities in the South has over the years
evolved from financing ad hoc research programmes to long-term
partnership between Belgian universities and universities of the
South. The programme with Morocco focuses mainly on
capacity-building, research and information sharing in the field
of water management and protection of its sources. The first
phase (1995-2001) included activities related to diagnostic
methods to measure and control the quality of water and soil
under irrigation, and the transfer of technology in the field of
hydrogeology. |
