CT TECH+ workshop, supporting the Government of Iraq in developing counter-terrorism policy approaches
On 14-17 September 2025, the UNOCT Cybersecurity and New Technologies Programme delivered a CT TECH+ workshop, supporting the Government of Iraq in developing counter-terrorism policy approaches to address the growing threat posed by the misuse of new technologies for terrorist purposes.
The workshop brought together around 30 Iraqi counter-terrorism experts and policymakers to discuss threats, identify and prioritize risks stemming from terrorist use of new technologies and to develop counter-terrorism policies while protecting human rights.
The meeting was opened by Mr. Sermad Hikmat, Secretary of the National Committee for Counter Terrorism, Office of the National Security Advisor of the Republic of Iraq, who welcomed CT TECH+ Initiative emphasizing its relevance.
The Acting Deputy Head of Mission of European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM-Iraq), Mr. Matteo Salvatori and Head of UNOCT Cybersecurity and New Technologies Programme, Ms. Akvile Giniotiene, underlined the good collaboration between the European Union (EU), the United Nation (UN) and the Government of Iraq. They highlighted the potential for CT TECH+ to expand the partnership to new areas of work.
The CT TECH+, a joint UNOCT–INTERPOL Initiative is funded by the EU and implemented under the UNOCT Global Counter-Terrorism Programme on Cybersecurity and New Technologies. The Initiative supports Iraq in updating its national counter-terrorism strategy, enhancing law enforcement technological capabilities, and fostering stronger cooperation with international and private-sector partners.
