United Nations Secretariat

The United Nations recruits qualified individuals in the following occupational groups:  

Recruitment takes place through national competitive examinations for entry level professional posts, through language examinations for language related posts, and through vacancy announcements for middle and higher level professional posts. The Secretary-General is particularly committed to increasing the number of women at the senior and policy-making levels (D-1 and above).

In addition to United Nations Headquarters in New York, the UN Secretariat has offices around the world including: Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva, Nairobi, Santiago and Vienna. The International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda are located in the Hague, The Netherlands, and in Arusha, Tanzania.

Peacekeeping missions

For UN peacekeeping operations all over the world, the General Assembly has mandated recruitment of staff to serve in both UN Headquarters to manage operations and in the field missions themselves, as managers and specialists.

External applicants are requested to send a detailed Curriculum Vitae, or to complete a United Nations personal history form (P.11), available at UN offices or on the website (www.un.org/Depts/dpko). In general, positions are offered in the following fields: civil engineering, election monitoring, electronic data processing, civil and judicial administration, human rights, humanitarian assistance, gender, legal affairs, logistics, political affairs, procurement and public information. Women are encouraged to apply.
