On 15 April, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued six stamps in celebration of World Art Day.

World Art Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2019 to promote the development, expression, and enjoyment of art.

Each year, World Art Day celebrations help reinforce the links between artistic creations and society, encourage greater awareness of the diversity of artistic expressions and highlight the contribution of artists to sustainable development.

It is also an occasion to shine a light on arts education in schools, as culture can pave the way for inclusive and equitable education.

The sheets are designed by Sergio Baradat of UNPA. The stamps feature artwork from the UNESCO art collection and represent the following:

  • 63¢ Henry Moore – Reclining Figure

  • $1.45 Le Corbusier – Pinton Frères

  • CHF 1,10 Rosa Maria Pujol-Avellana – Soleil éclatant

  • CHF 2,30 Toshihiro Hamano – Dove of Peace

  • € 1,00 Pablo Picasso – The Fall of Icarus

  • € 1,90 Yves Pèdé – The Spirits of the Ancestors

Each stamp sheet includes a description of the artwork as well as a statement by the UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay:

“Bringing people together, inspiring, soothing and sharing: these are the powers of art.

World Art Day is a timely reminder that art can unite and connect us even in the most

difficult of circumstances. The challenge of keeping art alive is therefore twofold:

we must support artists and cultural institutions and promote access to art for all.”

The stamps are available online at www.unstamps.org and in-person from shops at the UN headquarters in New York, Geneva and Vienna where the stamps can be used for mailing.
