High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2017

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you for your interest in the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development organized under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

Let me start with some numbers:
  • At last year’s Forum, 22 member States presented Voluntary National Reviews on their progress towards the 2030 Agenda. This year, 44 countries will be doing so during the Ministerial Segment of the HLPF.
  • Last year, 1500 representatives of civil society, the business sector and other stakeholders participated in the Forum. This year we have over 2400 such registrations.
  • The number of ministers and heads of UN entities attending the HLPF have also increased, as has the number of side events.
The ECOSOC High-level Segment will also meet during the ministerial week and will focus on eradicating poverty in all its dimensions.

The joint Ministerial Declaration of the High-Level Segment and the High-Level Political Forum will be adopted during the High-level Segment.

I will not go through this year’s program session by session. But I do want to give you an idea of what to expect.

During the first week of the Forum, there will be sessions reviewing the implementation of the SDGs that are in focus this year, including their interlinkages to the other goals and targets.

The goals in focus this year are SDGs 1, 2, 3, 5 9, 14, and 17, on poverty; hunger; health; gender equality; infrastructure, industrialization and innovation; the Ocean; and on means of implementation.

The 44 voluntary national reviews will be conducted during the three-day ministerial part of the Forum next week, from 17 to 19 July.

The mix of countries demonstrates the Agenda’s universality - countries from every region of the world, developed and developing countries, will share reviews on where they stand in implementing the 2030 Agenda.

The HLPF will be attended by over 70 Ministers.

But the HLPF is not just the place to hear about SDGs progress from countries. A broad range of stakeholders will participate in its interactive discussions.

The Secretary-General’s Report on Progress towards the SDGs will be presented during the Forum.

Among the special events taking place over the next two weeks are SDGs Learning, Training and Practice sessions; a Partnership Exchange; an SDGs Business Forum; and over 120 side events.

This list is not exhaustive, but I hope it gives you a feel for how the Forum has become the place to be when it comes to the global review of the SDGs.

I’ll be happy to take your questions now.

Thank you
