Artificial intelligence is reshaping economies, societies, and daily life. Its opportunities are significant. So are its risks. No country can address either alone.
On 6 and 7 July, Geneva's Palexpo International Convention Centre hosts the inaugural Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance — the United Nations platform where all governments and relevant stakeholders convene to discuss international cooperation, share best practices, and advance open, transparent, and inclusive discussions on AI governance. The Dialogue is co-chaired by H.E. Ms. Egriselda López (El Salvador) and H.E. Mr. Rein Tammsaar (Estonia).
Committed to in the Global Digital Compact and established by General Assembly resolution A/RES/79/325, the Dialogue is a concrete outcome of the Pact for the Future, moving from principles to practice.
Six months of consultations across the UN system laid the groundwork for the Dialogue. Governments, civil society, the private sector, and individuals from every UN regional group contributed more than 1,500 written submissions, grounding the process in broad and diverse perspectives.
The programme covers four themes:
- AI opportunities and implications
- Bridging AI divides
- Safe, secure and trustworthy AI
- Respecting, protecting and promoting human rights
On the first day, the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, 40 members selected from more than 2,600 candidates, co-chaired by Yoshua Bengio (Canada) and Maria Ressa (Philippines), will present its preliminary report, marking the beginning of an annual scientific contribution to global cooperation on AI governance.
The Dialogue is supported by a joint secretariat composed of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, the International Telecommunication Union, the Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, and UNESCO. This session takes place alongside the AI for Good Global Summit and the UN-mandated World Summit on the Information Society Forum (WSIS). The next Global Dialogue will take place in New York in May 2027.
Sessions will be livestreamed on UN Web TV — tune in on 6 July for the opening and the Panel's report presentation.
