The annual General Assembly-mandated Reham Al-Farra (RAF) Memorial Journalism Fellowship programme, organized by the Department of Global Communications, takes place from 10 September to 10 October.
The programme is named in honour of Reham Al-Farra, a 29-year-old Public Information officer who was killed in the bombing of the UN offices at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad in 2003. RAF is open to young journalists, aged 22 to 35, from developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
This year, eighteen journalists (from over 500 applicants) were selected from Algeria, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Montenegro, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Türkiye, Uganda, and Yemen, representing print, television, radio, multimedia, web, and podcasts.
While normally held in person, the 2025 RAF programme will be entirely virtual. The RAF Fellows will have a full schedule of briefings with UN experts on a range of topics and also meetings with several high-level officials, including the Secretary-General. They will also attend training workshops and meet with media organizations.
Since all the fellows are working journalists, what they learn is expected to be reflected in their future reporting on the Organization.
