The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) celebrates World Chess Day today with a special event sheet of ten stamps in the denomination of € 1,00.

In 2019, the General Assembly proclaimed this day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation in Paris in 1924.

The United Nations recognizes that sport, the arts, and physical activity have the power to change perceptions, prejudices, and behaviours, as well as to inspire people, break down racial and political barriers, combat discrimination, and defuse conflict.

Chess is an ancient, intellectual, and cultural game that encompasses elements of sport, science, and art.

As an affordable and inclusive activity, it can be played anywhere and by anyone, across the barriers of language, age, gender, physical ability, and social status.

It is a global game that promotes fairness, inclusion, and mutual respect. It can contribute to an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples and nations.

The stamp sheet was designed by Rorie Katz of UNPA.

Customers can personalize the sheet with a photograph that replaces the UN logo by either visiting any of the UN headquarters in New York, Geneva and Vienna or uploading their photos to the UNPA website.
