Afia, age 19, vaccinates a child. Afia is one of 70,000 dedicated polio workers in Afghanistan, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), who educate families about the dangers of polio and vaccinate millions of children nationwide. Defying traditional norms that forbid women to work outside the home, she is a member of one of the largest female workforces in the country: a national team fighting polio together.
