The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the United Nations’ central platform for reflection, debate, and innovative thinking on sustainable development. A gift from Sweden, originally designed by the Swedish architect Svem Markelius. Renovated in 2013, the Chamber features the new curtain ‘Diaologos’ by Ann Edholm.

The ceiling over the public gallery has been deliberately left ‘unfinished’ to symbolize that the work of the United Nations will never be finished. The architect intentionally chose to leave the pipes and ducts exposed as a symbolic reminder of the importance of the structure and foundation behind the UN’s never ending work.
