Summary

TICAD 9 will be held from 20 to 22 August 2025 in Yokohama, Japan, marking a pivotal moment in the enduring partnership between Japan and Africa. Since its inception in 1993, TICAD has served as a unique and inclusive multilateral platform, grounded in the principles of African ownership and international partnership, to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development across the continent.

The Prime Minister of Japan and African Heads of State and Government, co-organizers; the United Nations (UN), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, the African Union Commission (AUC), and a broad spectrum of stakeholders including international organizations, academia, civil society, youth, and the private sector will participate in TICAD 9.

Positioned at the intersection of major global initiatives such as the Summit of the Future in 2024 and the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development and G20 Summit under South African presidency in 2025, TICAD 9 will emphasize the importance of strategic cooperation, technology-driven and home-grown solutions to accelerate Africa’s transformation into a more prosperous, integrated, and peaceful continent.

TICAD 9 will draw on the outcomes of the TICAD 8 Ministerial Meeting, including the following two core principles endorsed by the joint communiqué in August last year:

  • Aim to “co-create innovative solutions (with Africa)” for challenges in Africa, Japan and the international community.
  • Accelerate the realization of SDGs as well as Agenda 2030 and collaborate for the realization of Africa’s aspirations in line with African Union’s long-term development vision such as Agenda 2063 and its second 10 years implementation plan.
