Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a real pleasure for the UNDESA team to have this opportunity to visit the famous ITAIPU Hydropower Plant.
Today is a special day. Today Paraguay and Brazil celebrate the 44th anniversary of the creation of the ITAIPU Bi-national enterprise.
After a remarkable 44-year journey, ITAIPU is internationally recognized as a triumph in the implementation of technology, and a triumph in international and bi-lateral cooperation.
ITAIPU is embraced as a brand. It is a “best practice” of how two nations can work together in peace and harmony, sharing natural resources such as water and energy to nourish the prosperity and well-being of their people.
As a citizen of China, I have been very interested in hydropower plants! China also has similar plants such as the Three Gorges Plant of 22.4 Giga Watts capacity, and the Xiluodu Plant, which also is very large with over 13 Giga Watts capacity.
Nevertheless, I understand that ITAIPU, although the second largest in capacity (as compared to the Three Gorges Plant), is the “Number One” in electricity generation. It broke the record in 2016 at over 103,000 Giga Watt Hours of electricity generation.
I congratulate ITAIPU for a history of excellence when it comes to operation and maintenance of such a large technological complex.
Furthermore, ITAIPU has demonstrated its decades-long commitment to providing comprehensive support to local communities, and to investing in long-term programmes for the protection of nature and the environment.
We are honoured to visit ITAIPU on this important anniversary.
We are also grateful for the opportunity to work with Itaipu Bi-national in the implementation of our new partnership on the “Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions” initiative.
This initiative will promote an integrated approach to water and energy in support of the 2030 Agenda and all the Sustainable Development Goals.
We look forward to a very fruitful and successful cooperation between ITAIPU and UNDESA in the next years.
Thank you.
