The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) recently brought together military and police trainers from across Asia and the Pacific to train others in the preparation of personnel to deploy to peacekeeping missions.
The Integrated Training Service of DPO partnered with the Malaysian Peacekeeping Centre to offer the “training of trainers” coursein June. Twenty-four trainers from 15 Member States learned how to deliver the UN's updated core pre-deployment training, which provides all civilian, police, and military peacekeepers with the knowledge they need before serving in the field.
The updated training includes new lessons on climate, peace and security, as well as strategic communications and information integrity. Participants also explored topics such as child protection, the rule of law, security sector reform, the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, and the protection of civilians through practical exercises and case studies.
Throughout the course, which included a two-day session on training methodology, participants practiced delivering lessons with guidance from UN trainers. An expert from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights led a session on the legal framework for UN peacekeeping.
Participants welcomed the practical nature of the course, saying it gave them valuable opportunities to strengthen their facilitation skills, exchange experiences with colleagues from different countries, and learn from one another.
