The Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) is pleased to announce that it will be upgrading the Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to provide 5G wireless cellular service in the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ) campus.

Implemented as part of the Capital Master Plan between 2008 and 2012, the current system at UNHQ offers a dependable wireless network infrastructure, facilitating connectivity for personnel to operate their mobile phones and wireless devices.

The current DAS necessitates an upgrade to meet the new 5G standards and is expected to enhance service quality. The upgrade will result in:

  • enhanced coverage for your wireless devices,
  • integration of new technology,
  • accelerated data speeds,
  • improved energy efficiency, and
  • better security.

The transition to an upgraded DAS will benefit the Organization in the following ways.

  • Improved Call Quality: DAS helps reduce dropped calls and improves voice call quality.
  • Faster Data Speeds: End-users experience faster data speeds for tasks like video conferencing on their mobile devices while using Team chats, downloading files and internet usage.
  • Better Battery Life: Devices expend less energy searching for signals, leading to improved battery life.
  • Increased Productivity: Reliable connectivity enhances productivity in workplaces, enabling personnel to stay connected without interruptions.

All designated ICT Departmental Focal Points on each floor will receive detailed notifications via email regarding the upgrade schedule and the specific areas affected. This communication will include information on the timing of the migration and the corresponding work locations. The upgrades in the Secretariat building are scheduled to commence in June, with anticipated completion by December 2024.
