The CSD Secretariat thus far has posted 266 partnerships and activities/processes to initiate partnerships on this website.

The following summarises those registered by the time of CSD-11 (29 April 2003)

Geographical coverage
About 60% of the partnerships have a global scope; the remaining 40% have a regional focus. Overall Africa, Asia, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and the Pacific Island countries are the region with the highest number of partnerships followed by Latin America and much fewer in Eastern and Central Europe.

There are several partnerships including North-South cooperation, but there are also examples of South-South partnerships.

Financial commitments
Nearly two thirds of the approved partnerships have funding (either to carry out initial phases or for the entire initiative). Not all submissions provided figures of funds involved/necessary to carry out projects. Based on the information provided over $1,250 million have been committed so far.
Over $120 million are currently being sought or negotiated with potential donors.

This does not include a number of announcements made at the WSSD by governments.

Governments:
One third of the approved partnerships were submitted by governments as leading partners, but many more governments are involved as partners of initiatives launched by non-governmental actors.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) :
There is hardly an organization or programme within the UN system who has not taken up the challenge to present or be involved in partnerships. More than one third of the partnerships are led by IGOs: specifically 15% are led by IGOs in addition to 24% led by UN agencies/funds and programmes (in the analysis we included in this category also WTO and WB) as leading partners. UNEP, UNDP, UNITAR, UN-Habitat, UNIDO and UNESCO are particularly active.

Major groups:
The vast majority of partnerships received have been initiated by NGOs, science and research centers, local authorities, universities and business, and those led by all major groups account for a quarter.

Private Sector:
A very small proportion of the partnerships are led by the private sector. However, private sector partners are involved in many of the submitted partnerships.

94 partnerships are to be found on the Business Action for Sustainable Development (BASD) website. More than 50% are focusing on one or more areas dealing with protecting and managing the natural resources base of economic and social development,  the others address cross-cutting issues.

Some of the proposals are already fairly specific and concrete, with an established set of partners, agreed-upon goals, and a clear funding strategy, a number of proposals do not yet contain clear time-bound and measurable targets. They are still evolving, and it will be important in the follow up work of WSSD to monitor their further development. The Secretariat has sent out a request for an update to all partnerships. The finding of this update will be made available on this website.
