Office of the Mayor of the City of New York

Mayoral Proclamation

Whereas: Today New York City joins the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day of Disabled Persons. First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992, this important event fosters an understanding of disability issues as it mobilizes support for efforts to promote the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.

Whereas: New York City’s greatness lies in the diversity of its populace. We all benefit from an exposure to different cultures, ethnicities, and personal histories. Disabled New Yorkers embody the perseverance, initiative, and strength that are among our most treasured civic values.

Whereas: The theme of this year’s observance is “Nothing About Us Without Us,” in recognition of the need for active involvement and participation among persons with disabilities in the planning of strategies and policies that affect their lives. Even in a city with more than 8 million residents, each perspective is instructive. This is especially true when assessing the unique needs of the disabled community. New York City is working to become more receptive to input from disabled New Yorkers, so that our renowned metropolis and its valued citizens might more fully realize their limitless potential.

Now therefore I, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, in recognition of this important event, do hereby recognize Friday, December 3, 2004 in the City of New York as

“International Day of Disabled Persons”
