I. Introduction
The present report is submitted pursuant to General
Assembly resolution 48/99 of 20 December 1993, which requested the
Secretary General to continue to give higher priority to disability
issues within the programmes of work of the United Nations system and to
report to the Assembly at its forty ninth session on relevant
developments in the area and in the context of his report on the
development of a plan of action to implement the long term strategy to
further the implementation of the World Programme of Action concerning
Disabled Persons. The draft plan of action, requested by the General
Assembly in its resolution 48/99 and by the Economic and Social Council
in its resolution 1993/20 of 27 July 1993, is attached as an annex to
the present report.
