World Summit on the Information Society: Action Lines of the Plan of Action

The common vision of the WSIS Declaration was translated in its Plan of Action into concrete action lines to advance the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals including those in the Millennium Declaration. The Information Society envisaged will be realized in cooperation and solidarity by governments and other stakeholders. In the second phase of WSIS efforts are being made to put the Plan of Action into motion and working groups have been set up to find solutions and reach agreements in the fields of Internet governance and financing mechanisms.

World Summit on the Information Society, part 1 Geneva,1-2 December 2003

The first phase of the World Summit was held in Geneva in December 2003 at the invitation of the Government of Switzerland. A number of issues relating to the information society were considered, and the outcome was the adoption of a declaration of principles and plan of action which addressed all the issues relating to the information society. The second phase of the World Summit will be held in 2005 in Tunisia, at the invitation of that country's Government. Participants in this phase will focus in particular on development issues, will evaluate the progress achieved to date and will adopt another plan of action based as necessary.
