Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries 30 May - 3 June 2011, Turkey

Africa Regional Meeting on the Brussels Programme of Action, 8-9 March 2010, Addis Ababa

The Africa Regional Review (ARR) meeting on the Implementation of the Brussels Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the decade 2001-2010, from 8th to 9th March 2010 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia was part of the preparatory process for the Fourth United Nations Conference on the least developed countries to be held in Turkey, in second quarter of 2011 as called for by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/Res/64/213 (A/C.5/64/L.18).

The main objective of the meeting was to undertake an appraisal of the implementation of the Brussels Programme of Action (BPoA) for the Least Developed Countries for the decade 2001-2010 for the Africa region and Haiti as well as to identify measures required at the national, regional and global levels to facilitate LDCs’ development and their beneficial integration into the global economy. The regional preparatory meeting was expected to formulate priorities for African LDC and Haiti for the next development decade. Thus it served as an important input into the outcome document for the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries. The meeting brought  together all key stakeholders of the BPoA, including member States , the United Nations system, relevant regional organizations, development partners and the broad spectrum of the civil society from Africa and Haiti . As per the General Assembly resolution, Haiti  participated in the Africa Regional Review meeting.

The review was co-organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) and the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa . The Outcome Document from the Regional review, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 63/227 of March 2008, was deliberated and endorsed in the context of the joint Annual meetings of the African Union Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance and ECA Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, which was scheduled for 29 March to 3 April 2010 in Lilongwe, Malawi.
