  1. What is the Beijing +5 Review?

    The Beijing +5 Review will be a Special Session of the UN General Assembly to be convened from 5-9 June 2000. The purpose of the Special Session is to appraise and assess the progress achieved in the implementation of the Nairobi Forward-looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women, and the Beijing Platform for Action five years after its adoption.

  2. Is Beijing +5 another UN Global Conference on Women?

    Beijing +5 is not another Global Conference, but a Special Session of the UN General Assembly to take place at UN Headquarters in New York.

  3. What is a Special Session?

    A Special Session is an extraordinary meeting of the General Assembly convened for a specific purpose. Special Sessions are also being convened to review progress after several other UN global conferences.

  4. How can NGOs participate in the Special Session?

    NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC and those NGOs accredited to the Beijing Conference that have applied for consultative status can send representatives to the next CSW from 28 February - 17 March 2000. Preparatory work for the Special Session will be a major focus at the CSW. For more information contact:

  5. Is there an agenda for the Special Session?

    The draft provisional agenda for the Special Session is available online at http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/csw/pcl6.htm

    The PrepCom in draft resolution E/CN.6/1999/L.2/Rev. 1 decided that the provisional agenda will include the following items:

    • Review and appraisal of progress made in the implementation of the 12 critical areas of concern in the Beijing Platform for Action

    • Further actions and initiatives for overcoming obstacles to implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action

  6. Will the Special Session re-open discussion on the Platform for Action?

    The PrepCom in draft resolution E/CN.6/1999/L.2/Rev. 1 reaffirmed "that the Special Session will be undertaken on the basis of and with full respect for the Platform for Action and that there will be no renegotiation of the existing agreements contained therein."
