The Secretary-General welcomes the meetings of the political dialogue for Burundi held in Arusha from 21 to 24 May under the auspices of the Facilitator of the East African Community, H.E. Benjamin William Mkapa, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania. He commends Mr. Mkapa’s decision to convene further meetings including those stakeholders who were not present in Arusha.
The Secretary-General stresses that a solution to the year-long political crisis in Burundi can only be found through an inclusive dialogue process that upholds the Constitution of Burundi as well as the principles of the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement for Burundi, of which the United Nations and the region are guarantors.
The Secretary-General fully supports regional efforts aimed at fostering a peaceful settlement to the crisis and reiterates the readiness of the United Nations to provide technical and substantive backing to the Facilitation, as mandated by Security Council Resolution 2279 (2016).

Déclaration attribuable au Porte-parole du Secrétaire général sur le Burundi
Le Secrétaire général se réjouit des rencontres relatives au dialogue politique sur le Burundi qui ont eu lieu à Arusha du 21 au 24 mai, sous les auspices du Facilitateur de la Communauté Est-Africaine, S.E. Monsieur Benjamin William Mkapa, ancien Président de la République-unie de Tanzanie. Le Secrétaire général se félicite de la décision de M. Mkapa de poursuivre ses réunions avec les acteurs qui n’étaient pas présents à Arusha.
Le Secrétaire général souligne qu’une solution à la crise politique qui dure depuis une année ne peut être trouvée qu’à travers un processus de dialogue véritablement inclusif, fondé sur la Constitution du Burundi et les principes de l’Accord d’Arusha pour la Paix et la Réconciliation, dont l’Organisation des Nations Unies est garante avec la région.
Le Secrétaire général soutient pleinement les efforts de la région en vue d’un règlement pacifique de la crise. Il réitère à cet égard la disponibilité des Nations Unies à fournir un appui technique et l’expertise appropriée à la Facilitation, conformément à la Résolution 2279 (2016) du Conseil de sécurité.
