The Secretary-General condemns the killing of a peacekeeper from the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) yesterday in Bangui.
A MINUSCA convoy travelling from Damara to Ngerengou (Ombella-Mpoko prefecture) came under fire by an unknown group of armed elements, some 55km north of Bangui. The MINUSCA military escort, composed of a Burundian infantry company, returned fire. During the exchange, one peacekeeper was killed and another was injured.
The Secretary-General deplores, in the strongest terms, attacks against United Nations peacekeepers and calls for swift action to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice. He reiterates his call for all armed groups to end the fighting and lay down their weapons.
The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to support the Central African authorities in their fight against criminality and putting an end to impunity, in line with MINUSCA's mandate.
The Secretary-General offers his condolences to the bereaved family and to the Government and people of Burundi. He wishes a speedy recovery to the injured soldier.

Le Secrétaire général condamne la mort d'un casque bleu de la Mission intégrée multidimensionnelle de stabilisation des Nations Unies en République centrafricaine (MINUSCA), lors d’une attaque hier à Bangui.
Un convoi de la MINUSCA entre Damara et Ngerengou (préfecture d’Ombella Mpoko) a été attaqué par un groupe armé non identifié, à environ 55 km au nord de Bangui. L'escorte militaire de la MINUSCA, composée d’une compagnie d'infanterie burundaise, a riposté. Durant l'échange, un casque bleu a été tué et un autre blessé.
Le Secrétaire général déplore, dans les termes les plus forts, les attaques contre des casques bleus des Nations Unies et demande que leurs auteurs soient rapidement traduits en justice. Il réitère son appel aux groupes armés à cesser les hostilités et à déposer les armes.
Le Secrétaire général réitère l’engagement des Nations Unies à soutenir les autorités de la République centrafricaine dans leur lutte contre la criminalité et l’impunité, conformément au mandat de la MINUSCA.
Le Secrétaire général présente ses condoléances à la famille du défunt ainsi qu’au Gouvernement et au peuple du Burundi. Il souhaite un prompt rétablissement au soldat blessé.
