Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on Nepal

The Secretary-General welcomes the agreement of 8 June on a new constitution for Nepal, a major milestone in the country's democratic development. He applauds the diligent effort and constructive leadership demonstrated by Nepali political leaders in reaching this agreement. This achievement is particularly laudable as it was reached amid challenging circumstances caused by the major earthquakes of April and May.

The Secretary-General encourages all political leaders to take decisive steps to implement the agreement, work on remaining issues and complete the constitution drafting process through inclusive consultation in the broad interest of the Nepali people.

The Secretary-General remains committed to the peace process and the reconstruction in Nepal, and reaffirms the continuing support of the United Nations.
