The Secretary-General condemns the assassination today of Mr. Mohamed Brahmi, an opposition politician and member of Tunisia's National Constituent Assembly. The Secretary-General notes that this is the second assassination of a prominent political figure in Tunisia this year. He calls for calm and stresses that acts of political violence weaken legitimate state institutions which underpin the democratic process.

This heinous act must not be allowed to derail the progress that Tunisia continues to make in its democratic transition, including on the Constitution, and in meeting the social and economic aspirations of the Tunisian people.

Déclaration attribuable au Porte-parole du Secrétaire général sur la Tunisie

Le Secrétaire général condamne l'assassinat aujourd'hui de M. Mohamed Brahmi, un membre de l'opposition et de l'Assemblée nationale constituante tunisienne. Le Secrétaire général note qu'il s'agit du second assassinat d'une personnalité politique en Tunisie cette année. Il appelle au calme et souligne que des actes de violence politique affaiblissent les institutions légitimes de l'Etat qui sous-tendent le processus démocratique. Cet acte odieux ne doit pas entamer les progrès que la Tunisie continue de faire dans sa transition démocratique, y compris en ce qui concerne la Constitution, et pour satisfaire les aspirations sociales et économiques du peuple tunisien.
