The Secretary-General welcomes today’s important Security Council resolution on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which sets out a new, comprehensive approach aimed at addressing the root causes of instability in the eastern DRC and the Great Lakes region. 

The Secretary-General is confident that the resolution will better enable the United Nations to support the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the DRC and the region signed in Addis Ababa on 24 February.  His Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, Mary Robinson, will work closely with all stakeholders to take this process forward. 

The Secretary-General hopes that the strengthening of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic Congo (MONUSCO) mandate, which also provides for the creation of an Intervention Brigade to address the problem of armed groups, will contribute to the restoration of state authority and long-term stability in the eastern DRC. He remains personally committed to helping bring peace and stability to the people of the DRC and the Great Lakes region and will keep working to ensure this remains a top priority for the international community.

Déclaration attribuable au Porte-parole du Secrétaire général sur l’adoption de la nouvelle résolution sur le mandat de la MONUSCO

Le Secrétaire général salue la résolution importante adoptée aujourd’hui par le Conseil de sécurité sur la République démocratique du Congo (RDC). La résolution propose une approche nouvelle et globale en vue de s’attaquer aux causes profondes de l’instabilité à l’est de la RDC et dans la région des Grands Lacs.

Le Secrétaire général est confiant que la résolution permettra aux Nations Unies de mieux soutenir la mise en œuvre de l’Accord-cadre pour la paix, la sécurité et la coopération pour la RDC et la région signé, le 24 février, à Addis Abeba. Son Envoyé spécial pour la région des Grands Lacs, Mary Robinson, travaillera en étroite collaboration avec toutes les parties prenantes afin d’avancer dans ce processus.

Le Secrétaire général espère que le renforcement du mandat de la Mission de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation en République démocratique du Congo (MONUSCO), qui prévoit également la création d’une Brigade d’intervention pour répondre au problème des groupes armés, contribuera à la restauration de l’autorité de l’Etat et au retour à la stabilité dans l’est de la RDC. Il reste personnellement engagé à aider à apporter la paix et la stabilité aux peuples de la RDC et de la région des Grands Lacs, et continuera à veiller à ce que cette question reste une priorité pour la communauté internationale.
