Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on Guinea-Bissau [scroll down for French version]

The Secretary-General commends the people of Guinea-Bissau for the peaceful and orderly conduct of the presidential election held on 18 March.  As the electoral process continues, he reiterates his appeal to the candidates and their supporters to abide by the laws, and calls on them to refrain from any action that could hamper the electoral process and to respect the official results when announced by the Supreme Court.
 
The Secretary-General condemns the killing of the former Head of military intelligence, Colonel Samba Djalo, which took place last night in Bissau. He urges national authorities to take necessary measures to bring those responsible to justice.
 
The Secretary-General reaffirms the readiness of the United Nations, in cooperation with the wider international community, tto support the consolidation of peace and development in Guinea-Bissau.
 
 
Déclaration attribuable au Porte-parole du Secrétaire général sur la Guinée-Bissau
 
Le Secrétaire général félicite le peuple de Guinée-Bissau pour la tenue de l’élection présidentielle dans le calme, le 18 mars.  Alors que le processus électoral se poursuit, il réitère son appel aux candidats et à leurs partisans à continuer de respecter les lois en vigueur, et leur demande de s’abstenir de tout acte susceptible d’entraver le processus et de respecter les résultats officiels qui seront annoncés par la Cour Suprême.
 
Le Secrétaire général condamne l’assassinat, hier soir à Bissau, de l’ancien Chef des Services de renseignement militaire, le Colonel Samba Djalo.  Il exhorte les autorités nationales à prendre les mesures nécessaires pour traduire les responsables en justice.
 
Le Secrétaire général renouvelle la disponibilité des Nations Unies, en coopération avec l’ensemble de la communauté internationale, à soutenir la consolidation de la paix et le développement en Guinée-Bissau.
