On 14 June 2016, the Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Martin Schulz, the President of the European Parliament.  The Secretary-General thanked the President for his efforts to forge European leadership on addressing the large movements of refugees and migrants towards Europe and encouraged him to attend and play a key role in the United Nations Summit on Refugees and Migrants taking place on 19 September in New York.

 
The Secretary-General and President Schulz agreed on the vital importance of the partnership between the United Nations and the European Union in implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the Paris Agreement on climate change, and the Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism.
