Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council.

The Secretary-General commended the European Union for its strong support for UN values and leadership in the adoption and implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The Secretary General also underscored the relevance of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a political framework for European solidarity and social justice.

In addition, the Secretary-General thanked President Tusk for the continued support of the European Union to the UN Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism, while recalling the need for stronger international cooperation in the face of emerging challenges.

He also appreciated the efforts of the European Union to manage the large movements of migrants and refugees to Europe, including through the expansion of legal pathways.
