The Secretary-General met today with the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Mr. Wang Yi. They discussed a wide range of issues, including the loss of a Chinese peacekeeper in Mali, the Middle East peace process and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

The Secretary-General expressed his deepest condolences to the Chinese Government and people for the recent loss of a Chinese peacekeeper in Mali. He also expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery for the three Chinese peacekeepers who were injured during the attack.

On the Middle East peace process, the Secretary-General expressed the hope that the French hosted ministerial meeting today would reaffirm the international community's commitment to the two-state solution as the only means of achieving the aspirations of both peoples. The Secretary-General updated the Foreign Minister on progress on the upcoming Quartet Report.

The Secretary-General noted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula remains of grave concern and the Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister discussed ways to break the current cycle of provocations. They also discussed recent developments surrounding the Korean Peninsula especially recent events after the 7th Congress of the Workers' Party of the DPRK. The Secretary-General expressed his readiness to support efforts towards a peaceful and denuclearized Korean Peninsula.
