The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. António Luís Santos da Costa, Prime Minister of Portugal.
The Secretary-General commended the Prime Minister’s inspiring call for compassion and solidarity in response to the large movements of refugees and migrants towards Europe, including his recognition of their potential to enrich and contribute to Portuguese society.
Regarding the current political situation in Guinea-Bissau, the Secretary-General stressed the need for international partners to maintain a unified front in encouraging the political leadership of Guinea-Bissau to overcome the current impasse.
He encouraged Portugal’s support for his Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism. Finally, the Secretary-General thanked the Prime Minister for Portugal’s support to UN peacekeeping operations in Africa.
