Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Choi Kyung-hwan, Special Envoy of President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Choi Kyung-hwan, Special Envoy of President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea (ROK), in Davos, Switzerland on the margins of the World Economic Forum.

They discussed global issues as well as cooperation between the United Nations and the Republic of Korea.

The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the support of the Korean Government, under the leadership of H.E. President Park Gyun-Hye, in advancing key international priorities, including the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as the Paris Agreement on climate change in 2015.The Secretary-General said he hoped that the Korean Government would play a leading global role in implementing these two visionary documents.

Noting that Special Envoy Choi had successfully completed his service as Deputy Prime Minister and had returned to the National Assembly this month, the Secretary-General asked that he galvanize support from the Korean Government and Parliament for the United Nations as it responds to the many challenges facing the world today.

They also shared concerns about current developments on the Korean Peninsula after the most recent nuclear test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The Secretary-General reiterated his hope that the parties will intensify efforts to move for denuclearization, peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
