Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with Mr. Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa

The Secretary-General today met H.E. Mr. Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa in the margins of COP21. The Secretary-General emphasised the important role of South Africa in the negotiations, both in its national capacity and as Chair of the G77 and China.
The Secretary-General and President Zuma agreed on the importance of all countries actively engaging in the process and being open to compromise in order to ensure that a meaningful, robust and universal agreement is reached in Paris.
The Secretary-General and President Zuma also discussed the best ways to defuse tension and promote dialogue in Burundi.
