Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H. M. Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

The Secretary-General had an audience today in Malta with H. M. Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Head of the Commonwealth.

In the course of the audience, Queen Elizabeth II and the Secretary-General discussed issues of mutual interest to the Commonwealth and the United Nations, notably on working together to prevent and resolve deadly conflict, eradicating poverty, promoting sustainable development and ensuring human rights for all.

They agreed on the importance of the Paris Conference COP21 to reach a universal and ambitious agreement on climate change.

The Secretary-General and Queen Elizabeth II exchanged views on two pressing issues the international community has been facing, namely the challenges posed by the increased movement of migrants and refugees, and the threats posed by violent extremism and terrorism.

The Secretary-General took the opportunity to commend Her Majesty’s commitment on issues related to climate change and development, and personally congratulated Her as the longest-reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom.
