Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with the President of the People’s Republic of China, H. E. Mr. Xi Jinping

The Secretary-General met today with the President of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping.

The Secretary-General thanked President Xi for inviting him to attend the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Discussing the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the Secretary-General commended on China’s strong commitment to multilateralism and its life-saving contributions, including to peacekeeping operations and Ebola response.

The Secretary-General told the President that he looks forward to his visit to the UN Headquarters later this month to attend the Sustainable Development Summit, the General Debate and other important high-level events, including the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, and the High-level Roundtable on South-South Cooperation, both co-hosted by the Government of China.

The Secretary-General called for continued support from China for building momentum ahead of the Paris Climate Change Conference and the implementation of the new sustainable development agenda.

The Secretary-General also commended China’s role in mediation efforts, including on the Korean Peninsula, South Sudan and Iran.
