The Secretary-General met today with the Minister for Foregn Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Mr. Wang Yi, in Beijing while attending the commemorative events marking the end of the Second World War.
The Secretary-General commended China’s commitment to multilateralism and contribution to the priorities of the United Nations. He told the Foreign Minister that he is looking forward to President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United Nations Headquarters later this month to attend the Sustainable Development Summit, the General Debate and other high-level events.
The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister discussed the importance of building momentum ahead of the Paris Climate Change Conference as well as the implementation of new sustainable development agenda. The Secretary-General thanked China for its support, including for peacekeeping operations and mediation efforts, such as in Iran and South Sudan.
The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister also discussed the situation in the Korean Peninsula, and the Secretary-General expressed appreciation for China’s constructive role on the issue.
