Mr. De Mistura, the Special Envoy for Syria will say a few words about his meetings in Damascus in the past two days.
Before we start, I would like to introduce Ms. Khawla Matar in her new position as the Director of the Office of the Special Envoy for Syria.

Special Envoy for Syria:

I’ve been spending now two days of intensive discussions here in Damascus with the Syrian Authorities, the Syrian Government and this morning I had a long meeting with his Excellency Bashar al-Assad

As you know my focus has been on the importance of reducing the violence of this conflict for the Syrian people and the increase in the unimpeded access of humanitarian assistance to all Syrians.

But of course the heart of my mission is to try and facilitate any political process that can lead to a political solution to a conflict which has lasted too long and which has no military solution.

I have also, as you can imagine, discussed the issue of the United Nations proposal for a freeze to reach a reduction of the violence in the city of Aleppo.

I am not in a position of elaborating on the details of the content of my discussions.

I am bound- and as you can imagine and that is totally logical- to first report to my Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and then to the Security Council which is going to hold a special meeting on Syrian on the 17th of February, in very few days.
