Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma, President of Sierra Leone

The Secretary-General met today in Freetown with H.E. Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma, President of Sierra Leone. They discussed the impact of the Ebola outbreak on the country’s peace consolidation efforts.

The Secretary-General expressed the continued support of the United Nations to Sierra Leone’s initiatives to contain the spread of Ebola, stem the crisis and save lives. He underscored the United Nations' commitment to enduring peace, progress and stability in the country.

Both leaders acknowledged that while progress had been made, much work still needed to be done to end the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone. The Secretary-General highlighted the importance of the Western-Area surge to achieving swift and positive progress on bringing the crisis to a close. He also pledged ongoing United Nations support for post-Ebola recovery in Sierra Leone, seeking to restore past socio-economic achievements.
