The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD).

He welcomed the important role Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been playing as leader of the opposition and her positive contributions toward strengthening the democratic fabric in Myanmar. His discussions touched on her role in Parliament and in the broader political and socio-economic sphere in the country.

The Secretary-General and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi exchanged views on the upcoming elections, constitutional reform, national reconciliation and communal issues in Rakhine and elsewhere in the country.

The Secretary-General underlined that there was great expectation that the upcoming elections in 2015 would be credible, inclusive, transparent and fair and would provide solid evidence of the consolidation of the democratic process in the country.
