Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H. E. Mr. Prayut Chan-o-Cha, Prime Minister of Thailand

The Secretary-General met today with His Excellency Mr. Prayut Chan-o-Cha, the Prime Minister of Thailand.

The Prime Minister briefed the Secretary-General on the current situation in Thailand, notably regarding the internal security situation. He also outlined the government's reform plan.

The Secretary-General acknowledged the Prime Minister’s point that Thailand had returned to stability. However, the Secretary-General expressed his concern at the continuation of martial law. He encouraged the Prime Minister to ensure a prompt return to civilian rule and constitutional order in Thailand.

The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister also discussed the issue of climate change and the upcoming meetings in Lima and Paris.


The Secretary-General also thanked the Prime Minister for Thailand’s long-standing contribution to UN peacekeeping. Moreover, he welcomed the news that the Thai people had raised donations for the efforts to eradicate Ebola. The Secretary-General encouraged Thailand to also participate by sending health workers to join the campaign to fight the virus.
