Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, on the sidelines of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games which are being held in Nanjing.

The Secretary-General expressed his gratitude to China for its strong partnership with the United Nations and its contributions to every area of the Organization’s work for the promotion of peace and security; sustainable development; and human rights.

The Secretary-General and the President discussed a wide variety of international issues, including the situations in Ukraine; Iraq; Syria; the Middle East, including Gaza; and Northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula, as well as the Ebola outbreak.

The Secretary-General also commended China’s growing role in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change and shaping the future development agenda.
