Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H. E. Mr. Hifikepunye Pohamba, President of Namibia

Windhoek, Namibia, 24 June 2014

The Secretary-General met today in Windhoek, Namibia, with President Hifikepunye Pohamba. They discussed the progress made by Namibia in the areas of development, human rights, gender equality and environmental sustainability. 

The Secretary-General commended Namibia’s positive contribution to the United Nations, as well as the role of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in peace and security efforts in the region, particularly in Madagascar.

The Secretary-General and President Hifikepunye Pohamba also exchanged views on he situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and underscored the importance of united action by all actors in the region.

They also discussed climate change issues, especially related to desertification and drought. The Secretary-General welcomed Namibia’s announced participation at the Climate Change Summit to be held at the United Nations in September.
